NIT Silchar also known as National Institute of Technology, Silchar has been ranked as the 17th among all the NIT in India. It was established in 1967 by the Government of India and the Government of Assam as a joint venture to cater the needs of a technical person in the country.
It was known as Regional Engineering College, Assam during its establishment and in 2002 its name was changed to National Institute of Technology, Silchar and was elevated to a status of “Institute of National Importance” in the year 2007. The Institute has also been granted the status of “Deemed University” in the year 2002. NIT, Silchar is now a premier Engineering College alongside IIT Guwahati and is quite close to NIT Shillong.
How to Reach:
NIT Silchar has located 12 km away from the city in the State of Assam. The easiest way of reaching the institute is either by reaching the Silchar Airport or the Silchar Railway Station. The Airport is located 35 km way from the city, and you can easily hire a taxi that is available in front of the Airport.
On the other hand, the Silchar Railway Station has located 12 km away from the city, and Auto’s and Taxis are available from the station. So you can choose accordingly which means of travel you want to choose.

NIT Silchar Placement Facilities:
NIT Silchar Placements are considered to be one of the best institutes in the whole nation. Consequently, it is equipped with the best infrastructure to support each and every stage of the placement procedure. All the training and placement related activities are taken care off by the Training and Placement Cell. This cell operates under the guidance of the Training and Placement officer.
Multinational Companies such as Accenture, HP, Idea, Indian oil, ITC, Philips, etc. companies come to this institution for conducting Interviews and selecting the brightest minds in the Institution. It can be easily said that all the students of this institution are easily placed and those who don’t get placed secure jobs off campus.
The computer facilities of NIT Silchar are taken care off by the Central Computer Center that has 3 labs and contains around 400 computers. Apart of that, all the computer facilities of the Institute have been connected by a campus-wide LAN and Wi-fi facility using high-speed fibre optics cable. It has a dedicated 1 Gbps leased line from BSNL that provides the Internet to the whole institute 24x7.
The institute also has a 16 Mbps leased line from BSNL that is dedicated to the Web Server and the mail server. Lots of access points have been deployed all over the institution that allows access to Wi-fi all over the campus. The personals at the Central Computer Center work around the clock to ensure that everything is running properly and smoothly.
Hostel and Mess Facilities:
There are 13 hostels in National Institute of Technology, Silchar. Out of all these hostels, 9 are allotted for the boys and 3 for the girls. 1 of these hostels is allotted for the PG students and 1 for the PhD. students. All of these hostels have been provided with all the facilities that are required by the students. Some of these facilities are a common room, indoor games, newspaper, water purifier, geysers, etc.
All of the hostels are provided with their individual messes. Some of these messes are private whereas some of them are run by the students. The messes that are run by the students are controlled by the students, and they decide the menu and whatsoever of the messes. In fact, all the messes are fitted with clean utensils, and they are cleaned every day.
The overall results of the institution are quite good. All the students of the institution pass with flying colours and secure good jobs. Some of the students who are not able to pass can appear for re-examination after 1 month. So it can be said that all the students of the institution pass out. This is the annual cultural festival of this college. This event generally falls in the month of February. Students from various colleges from all over the country attend this festival. This festival is one of the biggest festivals in all of the colleges in the state.
This is the technical festival of this institution which takes place over a span of 3 days. This festival encourages the students to show off their skills in various fields. The festival includes events like Robotics, Software making, programming, etc. It also includes workshops and lectures by many eminent personalities.
Thundermarch is the metal festival of the institution. The festival has received a lot of bands from all over the country who shake the whole institution with their mind blowing performances. This event takes place in the month February or March, right after Incandescence. Many international bands have also performed on the stage of this festival.
This festival is held in the month of April on the occasion of RONGAL BIHU, which marks the beginning of Hindu Solar Calendar Year. It mainly shows the Assamese culture and features performances by many famous personalities.
This institute has a playground in which the facilities of playing cricket, football, hockey and other games are quite possible. It also has courts for playing Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball and even has a court for playing Lawn Tennis.
Many sports related events take place all over the year. Therefore, the Institute also sends students to participate in the Inter-NIT sports event that is held every year.
- Ragging is banned and is a non-bail able offence where the culprit can be fined for Rs.10,000 and an imprisonment of 2 years.
- The Institute has a student body called “Gymkhana” which takes care of all the student welfare and extracurricular activities.
- NIT Silchar also has a 1.0 MW power plant.
