How to Reach NIT Nagpur, Rankings, Procedure & Facilities

NIT Nagpur has been ranked at 9th among all of the NIT in India. It was established in 1960 as the Regional College of Engineering, Nagpur but in 2002 its name was changed to Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology.

It is also called VNIT and in 2007 it was upgraded to the status of “Institute of National Importance.” National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is also a Deemed University.

How to Reach NIT Nagpur:

VNIT can be reached via Rail, Road and Air. The best way of reaching VNIT is by Air. First of all, you need to reach, Nagpur Airport. From there you can avail an Auto Rickshaw or a Taxi. The Institute is about 7 km away from the Airport.

It is quite possible to reach the Institute via Rail too. To reach by Rail, you need to reach the Nagpur Railway Station first. After that, you can avail a Taxi or an Auto Rickshaw from there. The institute is about 8 km from the Nagpur Railway Station.

Facilities of College:

Being an “Institute of National Importance” it has been provided with all the latest facilities that are required for the students to peruse their studies properly. Some of the major facilities of the Institute have been mentioned below.

Placement Facilities:

NIT Nagpur placement facilities fall under the Training and Placement Department. It provides the students with a platform where they can learn and get experience about working in a mainstream industry. This department guides the students from the first day onwards to make them able to secure jobs during the placements.

Over hundreds of companies visit the institution for conducting placements. In the academic year 2015-2016, these companies offered around 500 jobs to the students of this institution. Main companies like Jindal group, L&T group, Bajaj Auto Limited, Morgan Stanley, ZS Associates, etc. companies visit this institution for providing jobs offers to the deserving students.

Computer Facilities:

NIT Nagpur Computer Center looks after all the computer related activities of the Institution. The computer centre is available during the college hours and is also open for extended hours every day. The computer centre has enough PC’s that caters the needs of all the students of the institution.

Computer Centre provides internet facility to all the Departments, Academic Building and the Hostels. The people at the computer centre work around the clock to ensure that all the computer related activities are going properly.

Hostel and Mess Facilities:

Hostels have been provided for the students of the Institution. The hostels are known as Halls of Residence. There is a total of 14 Halls of Residences and out of these 12 are allotted for the boys and 2 are allotted for the girls. Each hostel has been provided facilities such as Telephone, T.V., Water Coolers, water heaters, etc. A Chief Warden has been provided to look after all the hostels. He along with the hostel manager and some other wardens manage and take care of the hostels.

NIT Hostel

All the hostels have been provided with their own messes. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are available in the messes. A committee of student representatives has been appointed; these students are responsible for taking care of the messes. All the students residing in the hostels have to provide the wages of the people working in the messes. The messes have been fitted with the best possible equipment’s that are required for cooking and also they are cleaned regularly.


NIT Nagpur results are quite good as the students are given proper care and guidance. The students who are not able to clear the examination can appear for re-examination after a month and can graduate from the institution. VNIT Nagpur Cut Off  is quite high too.


Being one of the top 10 NIT’s in the country is organises a number of festivals that are of National level. There are mainly three festivals of the institute viz. Consortium, Axis and Aarohi.


This is the business and management festival of the institution. This festival is organised in the mid of January and this is one of the few conventions in India that are organised by the Undergraduates. Thousands of student from all over the country visit the institution during this festival.

NIT Consortium

This festival is organised mainly to test and brighten the managerial skills of the students and also to increase the entrepreneurial thinking between the youths of the country. Many events are organised during this festival; some of those are Corp War, Biz Mantra, Car-Nama, etc.


This is the annual technical festival of NIT Nagpur that is organised at the end of September or in the beginning of October. It is the largest technical festival in Central India and also one of the biggest technical festivals of the country.

NIT Axis

Over 40 events are organised in this festival that includes events like Automation and Robotics, Construction and Design, Software and Electronics etc. Other than these events many exhibitions and workshops are also organised where many well-known personalities address the students.


Aarohi is the annual cultural festival of NIT Nagpur which continues for about a week and is organised at the end of February. The event is visited by lots of students from all over the country. Purple Haze – Band Contest is said to be the Flagship event of the festival.

Many famous Indian bands have performed on the stage of this festival. Other than this lots of competitions related to Dance, Arts, Music, etc. are organised during this festival.


Various sports facilities are also available in the Institution; some of these facilities are Cricket, Lawn Tennis, Football, etc. The Institute has facilities for Indoor games like badminton, Table-tennis, etc.

NIT Nagpur Sports

The students of the institution also participate in the Inter-NIT sports Tournaments. Institute Gathering is an annual sports event of the institution that runs for about a week in the month of January or February.

Additional Information:

  • Ragging is banned and is a non-bail able offence where the culprit can be fined for Rs.10,000 and an imprisonment of 2 years.
  • The Institute also has various student bodies and clubs which carry out various activities.

In the Edu-Rands ranking of 2015, VNIT Nagpur has been ranked as the 14th best engineering college in India. It has also been ranked 11th by the Times.
