NIT Calicut has been ranked 8th among the NITs in India according to the latest Ranking. It is a Public Engineering and Technology University which was started in the year 1961. Before becoming a NIT it was known as Calicut Regional Engineering College. Its name was changed in 2002. It is a 300 acres campus with various facilities.
The Institute started with the intake of 125 students. In 1996 it was increased to 250, out of which 100 students were for the preparatory courses and 150 students were for the First Year. Information Technology was started in 1984 and Postgraduate courses were started in 1987.
How to Reach NIT Calicut:
The best and fastest way to reach NIT, Calicut is by Train. You need to reach the Calicut Railway Station first. From there you can either avail a Taxi or an Auto Rickshaw. The college is 0.8 km away from the institution. You can also avail a bus from the Palayam Bus Stand which is quite close to the Railway Station.
Facilities of College:
NIT Calicut has all the facilities that are necessary for its students. Some of the major facilities of the institution are:
NIT Calicut Placements are overseen by the Department of Placement and Training which is under the control of the Faculty members. They send invitations to the companies for conducting interviews in the institution. After that, the Job Notification Form is made available to the students and the Department of Placement and Training fix a date for the interviews to be conducted.
The students are asked to submit their resumes to the department. The companies are informed about the date and asked to conduct placements accordingly. After the selection procedure is over the companies submit the list of candidates they have selected to the college. This done so that those students may not appear for interviews conducted by other companies. The institution receives around 200 companies every year and nearly all the big giants visit the campus. These companies provide very good packages to the deserving students.
The computing requirement of NIT Calicut is looked after by the Central Computer Center. Except for national holidays and a few local holidays, the centre works round the clock. They provide the best service to the institution. It can even be said that they are the hardest workers in the institution.
Being the backbone of the institution, it is connected with a 32 Mbit/s through a Nortel L3 switch. The centre is equipped with three IBM X-series servers. The desktops and thin clients are connected to the servers using gigabit switches.
Being one of the largest technical libraries in India it holds around 100,000 books. This library has a digital Library which has online resources and its name is “Nalanda”. The users of this institution can access around 17,000 journals, online courses etc. on Nalanda.
This library is also a part of Indest Consortium, that has a network of tech libraries all over India. The supercomputer, Purna is accessible from anywhere inside the campus. 1.5 teraflops are the peak speed of this super computer.
Hostel and Mess Facilities:
There is a total of 17 hostels provided for the students. Out of these 17, 13 are for boys which are named: A, B, C, D, E, F’, G, PG I, PG II, IH respectively and a newly formed Mega hostel is also provided. 4 hostels are provided for the Girls.
Students can use their laptops in their respective rooms. Except for hostel A and PG I, all the others are connected to the LAN network. The hostels have different facilities like Cable TV, Daily Newspaper, Indoor Games facility.
Each hostel is provided with its own mess. Any student can join any mess except for A and PG I hostel as these are only for the first years. Both vegetarian and Non-vegetarian food is available in these messes. A separate mess is provided for the girls. The messes are very clean and fitted with clean utensils.
Since its initiation year, NIT Calicut has been producing some remarkable results. The college also has a backlog programme. This allows the backlog students to re-appear for examination after a Month. The NIT Calicut cut off 2015 has been the highest in the history of the institution.
Two major events are organised in the institution every year. One in the monsoon semester and the other during the inter-semester.
Tathva is the annual technical management festival of the institution. It has become one of the biggest technical festival of South India since its hosting in 2001. It is a 4-day long festival which is generally held in the month of September. Companies like ParaMek Technologies has conducted lectures, seminars, workshops, paper competition, robotic events, quizzes etc. in this event.
The main aim of this event is to inspire technical interest among the students and the public. Eminent personalities like A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Jimmy Wales and much more have been a part of this festival.
Ragam is the biggest cultural festival of the institution. This festival includes events like Dance competition, Rock shows, Fashion shows, Music Concerts, quizzes and some her events. Famous artists and bands such as Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Blaaze, Parikrama have performed during this festival.
Students from Colleges and Universities from all over Kerala and outside visit this event for competing. Even international tribute bands such as Breathe Floyd and Higher on Maiden have performed on the platform of Ragam.
This institution has facilities for outdoor sports like Hockey, Football, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Cricket. It even has a Gym, A swimming pool, open air theatre and an auditorium. Inter-department sports events like cricket tournaments, football tournaments and such other events are organised by the institution.
It has also been a spectator to Ranjit Trophy matches in its cricket ground where many famous Players from the Indian Cricket team have played.
Some other information about the institution are:
- Ragging is banned and is a non-bail able offence where the culprit can be fined for Rs.10,000 and an imprisonment of 2 years.
- They have a department of Physical education.
- They also have an International liaison office.
Over the years this institute has produced some of the best minds in the country.
